I go literally screaming down the steps, scared as shit, thinking my tenant - the vampire novel lover - is keeping a bat as a pet.

Yes, I honestly thought she had a pet bat.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I hardly think reading a credo posted on her refrigerator is "going through her things." It's kind of like seeing the handcuffs hanging from her bedroom door...y'know they're just there. You want to ignore, but can't.

I think the front of the fridge is fair game.

You said you were "perusing the books" in her place.

Greg, I disagree. When one moves in, one's things are fair game to the landlord if said landlord is still doing work.

If you ever bothered to come here when invited, I'd have no problem at all if you perused the bookshelves here in the office. We have incredible titles:

Networking Essentials

Microsoft Project

Wireless Design

(All the good stuff is locked away in a closet.)

I'm not Wiccan, but I do love the creed.

But you forget the books in the bookcase in the living room with titles such as:

Pacific Game fishing
Birds of America
The Holy Bible
Spells and incantations
I-Ching for dummies
The Joy of Cooking

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I should know better than to engage you, but to clarify the book situation, the only thing in the room was me, a stepladder, a smoke detector, and books stacked on the fireplace mantle. Since it was pretty much me and the books, they were kind of hard to miss.

Do you feel better now?

While there would be months at a time where I never entered her space, there were plenty of times when it was necessary:

When the plumber came to fix her kitchen sink.

When the electrician came to fix a problem.

When the HVAC contractors came to provide bids and install AC and and a furnace in which they spent a week working in her space.

When the exterminator came to spray.

When the plasterer repaired the stairway wall.

When I repaired the attic window she broke and the dormer window that needed to be replaced.

When I seasonally installed and removed her window unit air conditioner.

When I replaced the several window blinds she managed to break.

When I installed a ceiling fan in her bedroom.

When I fixed the ceiling fan in her kitchen.

When I stripped and refinished the foyer and stairway to her apartment.

When I spent three days painting, laying linoleum, and installing new fixtures in her bathroom.

When I spent a week painting the attic and the stairway to it.

When I collected her mail while she was away.

When I fed her cats while she was on vacation.

When I spent every weekend in July and August 2004 stripping and refinishing the railing and beadboard wall surrounding the attic stairway.

IN A NUTSHELL, you spend enough time working in a space you notice things around you, greg, whether you want to or not.

It also depends.
here in the complex I live in, you have to give permission for them to enter your apartment when you arent there, and it has to be for a specific purpose. I dont give that permission, anything that needs to be done can be done with me here.

It was the way you said perused the books. Just kinda sounded "snoopish" (no not snoop dogg-ish) like you were snooping around.
Youi would most likely notice some of your surroundings while you were working in there, I'll give you that.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">They don't need your permission. All they need to do is notify you that they are doing maintenance work. THEY own the building, NOT YOU, and they have the right to keep it in working order whether you're present or not.
